Bense Vision is pleased to introduce iLASIK as part of the life-changing experience of laser vision correction. iLASIK™ delivers enhanced comfort, safety and visual outcomes for patients.

The Wonderful World of iLASIK™

The very first step in any LASIK procedure involves the creation of a corneal flap. The dimensions of the flap, its thickness and its overall configuration are all critical elements in the overall success of your LASIK procedure. Simply stated: The femtosecond laser used for blade-free flap creations, is the only device that can fully customize each and every flap to the needs of each patient.

A Flap:

Historically, the first step was always performed using a hand held steel blade in a microkeratome device.

Microkeratome housing a hand held steel blade:

While flap creation with a blade has proven to be a safe and successful procedure in most cases, the majority of complications seen in LASIK, have been associated with use of these steel blades housed in the microkeratome. Creating the flap with IntraLase™ laser used in iLASIK™, eliminates these blade-associated risks.

Examples of Blade Complications not seen in iLASIK:

iLASIK surgery uses the IntraLase™ laser which is a new state of the art femtosecond laser treatment that creates the LASIK corneal flap by using a blade-free computerized laser technique. With the IntraLase Method, tiny pulses of laser light pass harmlessly through the outer surface of the cornea, forming a uniform layer of microscopic bubbles just under the surface. Your doctor determines the exact dimensions of the bubble layer and this is all computer controlled for maximum precision. The doctor is then able to gently separate the layers, creating the flap.

100% Blade-Free IntraLase™ Laser creating a series of bubbles instead of cutting the cornea:

The second step in LASIK

The second step in any LASIK procedure, involves reshaping the cornea with an excimer laser. Bense Vision reshapes your cornea in a way that is uniquely safe and predictable, employing the Advanced CustomVue™ Method on the STAR S4 Excimer Laser™. When this reshaping is complete after several seconds of treatment, the flap is gently replaced in its original position where it literally 'locks' back into place due to its precise shape like a ‘manhole cover' and your eye heals very quickly over the next several hours.

Although advancements are made in laser eye treatment every year, the introduction of 100% blade-free iLASIK™ is the biggest leap in technology since the introduction of standard LASIK in the late 1990's.It is even a bigger advancement than the introduction of wavefront guided technology that we and other clinics use to customize the laser treatments. This blade-free technology forms an integral part of the iLASIK™ procedure done at Bense Vision, the only centre offering this revolutionary treatment in this province.

Benefits of Blade-free iLASIK Flaps

This "No Blade, No Cutting" procedure produces a flap in a much safer fashion, that is much more precise in depth, is cleaner, more accurate and is thinner than the hand held steel blade used in regular LASIK procedures using a microkeratome. This results in many benefits to the LASIK patient.

  • More patients achieve vision 20/20 or better 1
  • Better quality of vision overall, particularly in low light such as at dusk or at night 2. For all indications submitted to the FDA, satisfaction with night vision improved after the CustomVue procedure.
  • Customized corneal flap based on what's best for the patient's eyes

A major benefit is that all suitable prescriptions can now be treated with bladeless technology, thus eliminating the induced distortion and possibility of serious complications associated with the creation of the flap by manual blade. Both short term and long term safety are improved upon. Increased peace of mind and confidence for both the doctor and patient lessens stress and anxiety. Both mechanical breakdown and human error are likewise reduced.
