Implantable Collamer Lens(ICL)
This procedure is not performed at Bense Vision™ for a variety of reasons. It
is a wonderful procedure and Dr. Mike Bense has sent several clients to the Herzig
Eye Institute where DR. Herzig is an expert in this technology.
The following information is listed FYI only.
The Implantable Contact Lens is used for patients with:
- High levels of myopia (nearsightedness) >-10D
- High levels of hyperopia (far sightedness) > +4D
- Astigmatism: The Toric ICL™ corrects nearsightedness with astigmatism.
- Patients with corneas that are too thin for LASIK/PRK
In presbyopia, the ICL treatment can create monovision ICL, correcting one eye
for distance and the other for reading.
What is an Implantable Contact Lens (ICL)?
The ICL is an intra-ocular lens (IOL), similar to that used in cataract surgery.
The difference is that the ICL is placed inside your eye, rather than on the surface
of your eye. The lens is soft and tiny, much like your natural lens, but does not
replace it. The ICL is specially shaped to correct nearsightedness and farsightedness.
The surgery typically takes 15 – 30 minutes to perform. Only one eye is treated
at a time. The second eye is usually treated 1 week later.
ICL is the perfect solution
ICL is a good option for younger patients with high refractive errors, as their
intraocular lens remains in place and this enables them to focus clearly at a reading
distance. The fact this natural lens remains in place, these patients have the chance
to free themselves from spectacle or contact lens dependence.
The ICL is capable of correcting the most common vision disorders as well as
those disorders where conventional laser treatment may not be advisable. Those conditions
may include:
- If you are too near-sighted or too farsighted
- If you have a thin cornea
- If you have dry eyes
