The new iFS™ femtosecond laser technology has been shown to be much safer, more predictable, and can achieve superior outcomes. The iFS™ blade-free laser is only available at Bense iLASIK™ Centre and SurgiSpa.
So, why would laser centres today still offer inferior technology? The answer is very clear – cost. The purchase of a Femtosecond laser costs around $500,000, there is an annual maintenance fee of around $70,000, and a disposable cost (suction ring) of approximately $200 per eye. A microkeratome that uses a steel blade can be purchased for $35,000 or less, there are no annual maintenance fees, and the cost of a blade is around $50 for both eyes. So you can see from a cost point of view there are significant savings to a laser centre to offer inferior technology with a steel blade housed in a microkeratome.
The most advanced technique of LASIK utilizes the new iFS™ 100% blade-free laser that creates a thin flap of tissue. This is a revolutionary technique that offers an unparalleled method of accuracy and safety. Patients feel a slight amount of pressure but no pain. The second part of the procedure is the reshaping of the cornea with the excimer laser. The LASIK flap is gently lifted and the laser is activated to remove a precise amount of tissue on the underlying bed. Usually less than the thickness of a hair is removed. The flap is repositioned over the bed and it adheres in a few minutes. This painless and quick procedure allows for the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
Patients are often concerned that if they move their eye during the procedure it could affect the outcome. Fortunately the most sophisticated lasers are equipped with accurate eye trackers that monitor the position of the eye and allow the laser pulses to be delivered to the right spot ensuring an excellent outcome.

In NL, only Bense Vision® offers intraLASIK™ and iLASIK™, so we are not in competition with any LASIK centre in NL as far as these advanced blade-free procedures are concerned.
However, we also offer NearVision - CK®, and Intacs™ for keratoconus. If anyone can produce a written quote for any of these procedures done in a recognized centre that is certified to perform these procedures in NL, we will beat that price by $100 per eye.

YOUR CHOICE
For financial reasons, you may choose an older and less costly procedure like Standard or Custom LASIK done by blade, but please remember that these are older and more conventional laser procedures. These older procedures use dated and inferior technology, that do not match intraLASIK® and iLASIK™ for safety and results. That is why Bense iLASIK™ Centre and SurgiSpa have now totally abandoned the use of steel blades in all LASIK cases. Standard LASIK and PRK also frequently worsen one’s night vision and is therefore mostly avoided by discerning laser clients.
