Cataracts

Cataracts can occur in one or both eyes. It is an aging change that occurs in all of us at one point or another. Surgery to remove a cataract is not necessary until clients feel that it interferes with their ability to enjoy life. For some, that point is reached a lot sooner than in others. Cataract surgery is also done if the cataract interferes with the treatment of other eye problems like repairing a retinal detachment properly and so forth.

More than 60% of all North Americans will have had a significant cataract by the age of 60 years of age, developed far enough to consider cataract surgery. After regular cataract surgery, these people will still need to wear optical aids to see well in the distance as well as up close. It is not usually combined with modern, more expensive type lens implants that allow for simultaneous far and near sight and is not designed to remove much astigmatism, hence the need for spectacles after the surgery.
