Modern Refractive Cataract Surgery

It is a delicate procedure done under a microscope. Your human lens is gently vacuumed up by an ultrasound machine. This lens is then replaced by an artificial lens implant (IOL), the size of a tiny clear, thin shirt button. Recovery is almost instant if all went well with full healing occurring within 4-6 weeks of the surgery. Vision is generally much better almost immediately after surgery. Complications are not uncommon but seldom harmful in the long run. Some serious complications including blindness can occur. You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure. Post-operative care will include eye drops, wearing of glasses, shields and the use of non-prescription pain medication.

Cataract Treatment Options

MCP now insures every patient who requires cataract surgery and provides basic (cheap) implantable replacement lens. At Bense Vision™ you have the option of a much better lens than the ones MCP pays for. These lenses can be monofocal or bifocal. They are usually aspheric in design. Many are protective of one’s macula by being yellow tinted.

If an eye surgeon wants to get paid for doing a cataract operation, it must be performed in a NL hospital. You have no choice in this matter. You have no choice how long you will need to wait to be scheduled for your surgery (1st in 1 eye then the next eye usually). You have little say as to what implant you are to obtain. No bifocal lenses can be inserted. This is an anomalous situation because all oer the world, people are allowed to choose!

The treatment involves a 10 minute operation: Firstly the eye is anaesthetized using eye drops and the natural lens is removed with an ultrasound machine using a technique called Phacoemulsification, then an artificial lens (implant) made out of various materials is implanted into the eye.
